There are differences in understanding in three areas: how to work with volunteers, how to work with online folk, and how newsroom folk do things. There are ways of understanding transparency and ways in which the blogosphere bites back when one transgresses one of the Unwritten Laws of Transparency and Hierarchy (yes, we have hierarchy. remember: all bloggers are created equal, but some bloggers are more equal than others. and I’m not necessarily talking the A-list…)

I am, though, very excited to be part of Assignment Zero, and I’ve had the chance to define what I’m to do in my position contingent on the needs of the Team. Part of what I do is keep an eye on what’s being said in the blogosphere. Another part is following the blogs of the Editors and Contributors (when I can find them) Another is giving input on new site design–coming into the project, I’ve found navigation confusing and it’s not easy to follow what’s going on. We’ve put our heads together, given David Cohn lots of good input and have a re-design that will launch later this week.

Along with this, I’m keeping an eye on how tech stuff is used by various projects in AZ–if I can get the Editors to give me input on what’s going on and what they’re employing vs. me chasing down what they’re doing. I want to know how some of the new tools, like Twitter, might work for journalists in this space. Can they help or do they become a distraction? Is it too much to ask people to use new tools and can they adapt to not just the tools but to the world that has spawned those tools.

When I talk to journalists in general, I often find that many have a reluctance to understand online as a particular world with its own mores and, for lack of a better word, quirks. There is much emphasis on how to graft the process of journalism onto This World. But This World spins in a way that, in many cases, doesn’t care about journalism–because it is not journalism. It is conversation. Perhaps there are ways in which those who want to make a section of the Internet, and blogging, into journalism can do that–but the entirety of it is not journalism. To know that parts of This Space are not journalism requires thinking of This Space in physical terms–as a place vs. a publication, and that written word in this space is really more like people yapping at the diner than it is people printing out pamphlets.

The people who want to be Pamphleteers will let you know that’s what they’re doing. People are conscious of what they are doing–and don’t need others to define it for them.

Maybe that’s part of the problem–that it takes time to understand what a person is doing out here, if it’s conversation or journalism. If it’s Yapping or Pamphleting. To know the difference requires Reading and Understanding–and corporations often want a bot to do the work of a person.

Here it is – a newly minted phrase to describe today’s kids (under 11) and their connectivity. “Generation We.” At least, according to a recent CNET article and the strategy & research firm Iconoculture.

Generation We is actually a subset of the group you probably refer to as Millenials (when you aren’t calling them toddlers, kids or tweens). The premise of this new sub-group of Millenials is that these kids have instant access to information and are more globally connected.

The article also makes the argument that since these kids are the offspring of Gen X, they are taught the benefits of technology by their parents, many of whom grew up around nascent technology during their day. What Gen X really grew up with is the VCR, the PC and eventually the cellphone.

But just as Gen X astonished their Boomer parents with an ability to effortlessly program the VCR, this new Generation We is just as quickly and easily adapting to the technology that is currently available.

Consider this – as we get older, we start to have mental controls put in place that define our understanding of what is real, what is possible. As adults, we are limited by our experiences and society’s informing us of what’s possible. So when new technology comes about advancing our productivity or changing the way we communicate, we are stuck with our old concepts.

Kids don’t live in this black and white world, for them it’s all shades of gray – anything and everything is possible, because they haven’t lived long enough to have society and experience dictate “reality” to them.

And suddenly, just like we astonished our parents, a new gap is created and we’re marveling at how a 5-year old can use an iPod or messaging on a cell phone.

Technology is advancing at an even faster clip, with new functionality being developed every day. I was at a mixer the other night for paid content and mobile marketers. Hearing people refer to 2000 and 2001 as “the old days” was eye opening. Thinking back on that pre-iPod era, life was different. At least from a technological standpoint.

However, the emotional needs and wants of kids hasn’t changed, from Baby Boomers to Gen Y to Millenials and this new subset of Generation We. Kids still yearn to understand who they are and find their place in the world.

Unlike our Boomer parents, where your world was defined by your town or state borders, “the world” in this case truly does take up the entire planet. This exposure to people of different cultures and societies, whether in a chat room, multiplayer video game setting or other online community such as Second Life, could lead to some profound developments.

Is it possible that, as a result of technology, the view of the U.S. as “isolationist” to the rest of the world, not understanding or willing to learn about foreign cultures, will diminish? It’s already easier than ever to travel the globe, perhaps this new generation will have the wanderlust that has always motivated Aussies and Kiwis to set out and explore. And what will be the political implications? Only time will tell.

As we decide whether or not to call this new group “Generation We”, it is important that we remember the circumstances that these kids are experiencing. Internet access is nearly universal, cell phone penetration is on the rise and the ways in which we consume media is going to take some bigger leaps forward in the next few years. Undoubtedly it will be hard for us “old folks” to use it and understand it, but the kids will take to it wholeheartedly and effortlessly.
